Chroma Player Editor's Review

Chroma is a advanced video player.

The first thing that impresses about Chroma is its design. It's one of the best designed video players for Mac OS X. Besides the good look, the producers also implemented a lot of features.

It features both DVD and general video playing functionality. It provides as well the possibility to use various types of subtitles for the played video content. Besides the local stored files, or the ones from removable media, Chroma also plays networked content. You can provide a stream URL which can be played by the application.

The DVD playing allows you to use default language configurations for the audio stream and the subtitles. It also features other things like what the application should do when a DVD is inserted, or what the application should do when the DVD is damaged.

It can either use the built in codec support, or it can use 3rd party video codecs. In most of the cases it is recommended to enable the auto-select functionality.

The subtitles engine provides you just a few display options such as the font face, character encoding, or alignment. It also features a quick switch between turning on or off the subtitle transitions animations.

Pluses: it has a good video playing engine, it features lots of useful options and configurations, it as a very well designed user interface.

Drawbacks / flaws:

In conclusion: this a very good DVD/video player which can compete with QuickTime Pro.
